Hector is advised to stay off the field until Agamemnon is injured; and upon that, the Gods will vouchsafe his safety.
Odysseus, Diomede & Agamemnon (all Greek warriors) are injured on the battle field. Even Hector sustains minor windfall. It was not a good day.
Nestor is frustrated with Achilles and tells Patroclus that he is a better man. Patroclus has desires to join the battle and listens to Nestor's words.
Polydamas (Counselor of War) to Hector helps to devise a plan on how to take down the Greek wall. Hector half-way listens and encourages his men to move forward.
The wall was not approved by the Gods (such as Poseidon) to build; however they will let it stand until Hector and Achilles are no more, then it will be washed away like it never existed.
Zeus has looked away from the battle scenes, Poseidon takes advantage as he is raged by Zeus, and takes on the field. Poseidon puts valor into the hearts of the Greek men.
Idomeneus is the law giver man of the Greek army. He plays a critical role in establishing which parts of the plain require attention and focus.
Pisander, a Trojan, is slayed by King of Sparta's Menelaus, and he vaunts over his body calling Trojans weak and foolish as they don't know when to stop. Harpalion also attempts with Meriones.
Nestor (an older counselor, seer) meets up with Odysseus and Agamemnon. Agamemnon tells Nestor he was right. Odysseus rebukes and says there is no chance we can pull out of the war now.
Poseidon continues to encourage the Argives (Greeks / Danaans). The two forces are at peaks, and Hector is even taken down temporarily by Ajax.
Hera, Queen to Zeus, conspires with Sleep (brother to death) to put Zeus to sleep so she can take the next course of actions.
Zeus awakens from Hera's spells, finds Hector lying on the field unconscious, and is enraged by her. He recalls how she did this to him before and points out that she was the cause of Heracles suffering as well. Yet, Hera defends herself to say it wasn't her this time.
Men can go much further when they stand together.
Achilles allows Patroclus to wear his armor and he goes out in the field. Achilles told him to only push them to the wall and then return; however Apollo pushes him, Hector kills him.
